Skinnyo helps you lose weight using peer pressure and challenges

For many people, the holidays mean food. Nom nom nom, chomp chomp chomp, and suddenly you've gained a few extra pounds. Skinnyo is a social website that tries to help you stage a preemptive strike in your struggle against chubbiness. At the core of the site is the weight graph, somewhat similar to the graph used on FitDay. Once you create an account, you can join all sorts of "challenges," or you can even start your own challenge.

Some of the public challenges at the time of writing are "Christmas Countdown," "Let's make the world 20 lbs lighter," and "2kgs in 4 weeks" (the loser buys the winner an HTC Desire HD!).

A challenge can have a limited number of participants, and it can also be private. The profile page, shown in the screenshot above, lets you micro-blog your way to a skinnier bod. Each update has your latest weight trend prominently displayed right next to your image.

Most of the people I know don't even like knowing their own weight, much less making it a public announcement. But if you're socially-inclined, Skinnyo is one interesting way to lose some weight.

They may not be the first vacuum shoes to emerge in concept form, but these so-called Foki shoes from designer Adika Titut Triyugo are certainly the most stylish -- at least in an ASIMO chic sort of way. They also boast a few new tricks not seen before, including an LED display on top that indicates how much dirt you've picked up, and a unique deign that allows them to be completely folded up when not in use. Of course, "concept" is the key word here, but we've got to guess there's an untapped market out there for wearable appliances. Dust Buster gloves, anyone?

Momiga is an extremely minimalistic, fun Time Waster

Yes, that's an actual screenshot up there, not an error. That's what Momiga looks like!

One dot, one button (the left mouse button, or SPACE on the keyboard), and one cute "beep" sound. That's all you get. This is probably the most bare-bones time-waster we've ever published, but it's awesome just for that.

You have to get the dot from one end of the screen to the other. The dot's starting position signifies your progress through the levels of the game. As you can see in the screenshot, the dot is quite high, so I'm fairly well advanced in the game.

On every level, your input affects the dot in a slightly different way. Sometimes your click launches the dot very forcefully, so you have to be careful. On other levels, the click causes the dot to levitate, so you have to keep clicking so that the dot doesn't crash at the bottom of the level (but don't click too fast, or it would go out the top).

It's a short time waster, but it's a fascinating one. The level on the screenshot is very frustrating, but all of the other ones were fun, and fairly easy to pass.

Two Kinects join forces to create better 3D video, blow our minds (video)

Remember when Oliver Kreylos impressed and shocked us by showing that a single Microsoft Kinect could create some remarkably stout 3D video? He's back at it again, this time blowing minds and demonstrating that two Kinects can be paired and their output meshed -- one basically filling in the gaps of the other. He found that the two do create some interference, the dotted IR pattern of one causing some holes and blotches in the other, but when the two are combined they basically help each other out and the results are quite impressive. As you can see in the video after the break, Oliver is able to rotate the camera perspective and basically film himself from a new camera angle that exists somewhere in between the position of the two Kinects, and do-so in real-time. Sure, the quality leaves a lot to be desired, but still. Wow.

RSS Live Links for Chrome lets you monitor news feeds in real-time

Not everyone uses Google Reader; some people (a dying breed, perhaps) like to consume their RSS feeds locally, using a desktop feed reader. Firefox has long had a Live Bookmarks feature that gave it some of those "desktop feed reader" powers: Live Bookmarks understands RSS, and it can always show you a list of a website's most recent headlines.

RSS Live Links brings just that sort of functionality to Google Chrome, along with a nice extra feature: instant notifications.

Whenever one of the feeds you've subscribed to updates, you get a nice sound effect (a human voice going "Boing!"), the icon shakes, and an unread count appears. When you then click the icon, you can see a list of the unread items in each feed, and hover over them to see a preview. Naturally, clicking an item opens it in a new tab.

This is a powerful add-on; it has a very rich configuration interface, with no less than 20 different options (I counted!). You can also configure the color scheme, select one of several different notification sounds, and customize it in a myriad other ways. Slick!

Social browsing with Mozilla Labs F1 -- how RockMelt should've been

Mozilla Labs has just let loose the next stage in browser empowerment: F1. In one fell swoop, with just a single add-on, F1 brings social sharing to Firefox. With F1 installed, it's just a matter of clicks to share a site with Twitter, Facebook or Gmail.

The F1 button, which works in Firefox 3.6 and 4.0, sits in the top right corner of your browser, next to the search bar. The first time you use it, you need to authorize any (or all) of the three services. After that, you simply hit the F1 button, select a sharing service, and hit share. In case you were wondering, hitting F1 on the keyboard doesn't work -- that still brings up the Firefox help pages, alas. There's a video of it in action after the break.

It's painfully simple and stunningly effective. Sharing services like AddToAny and ShareThis have been deprecated by a 35 kilobyte Firefox add-on. F1 is faster, more convenient and unfailingly secure -- and this is just the beginning! While it only supports Facebook, Twitter and Gmail for now, Mozilla Labs talks about an API that will allow social sites to hook into Firefox; in theory, F1 could support any and all sharing services, all from within the browser.

This is the beginning of the end for the 'Share' block that hunkers like a hairy, unkempt baboon beneath each and every blog post on the Web. It really makes you wonder what exactly RockMelt spent 10 million dollars and two years of development on. F1 was probably developed in less than a week by a couple of Mozilla Labs code foxes.

Blosics 2 Level Pack is an awesome user-generated Time Waster

When Lee reviewed the original Blosics time-waster back in 2009, he concluded the review with the words "I just wish there were more levels, but I'll be heading back for another round."

Well, it seems like Lee's wish has been granted, with the Blosics 2 Level Pack. Gameplay is exactly like the original: You shoot cannon balls out of a certain area of the screen, trying to make a tower of bricks topple. When the bricks fall into the abyss you gain points, but every ball you shoot also costs you points. You also have four different balls sizes - the larger the ball, the more expensive (and powerful) it is. It comes down to figuring the most effective trajectory and tactic for toppling the tower.

The are 30 user-generated levels, and it's very addictive. I made it all the way to level 15 before the need to perform some actual work caught up with me. Very engaging.

Sharp's Galapagos media tablets landing December 10, costing quite a few Yen

Sharp's evolutionary tablets are coming, people. It's just that they're coming to Japan and they're not going to be terribly affordable when they do arrive. The Kin maker has just revealed a December 10 launch date for its Mobile and Home Galapagos models -- a 5.5-inch slate with 1024 x 600 resolution and a 10.8-incher with 1366 x 800 resolution, respectively -- pricing them at ¥39,800 ($474) and ¥54,800 ($653) for the Japanese market. As usual, direct currency translations are inadvisable, but if you must have a price comparison of some sort, the larger Galapagos model (equipped with an 8GB microSDHC storage card) costs ¥4,000 less than Apple's 32GB WiFi-only iPad. Of course, the big differentiator in Sharp's mind will be the e-bookstore and content ecosystem it's working so hard to create for these Galapagos terminals -- the value of which has yet to be determined.
